The wisemen were given a word to travel to a distant land in search of a star and there they would find a king, the Messiah. Some scholars think the wisemen travelled for two years to reach Bethlehem. Even if it was a fraction of that time, it was still a really long time to search for a star and a baby!
Have you ever stopped to truly consider the journey of the three wisemen? The comforts they may have left travelling to a distant land. The incredible step of obedience they took in following a word from God about a star and a baby. Leaving all that they knew and just going.
Next time God asks you to do something and you hesitate stepping out in obedience, consider the obedience of the wisemen: the request God asked of them and how they met God with their obedience. God has never asked me to travel anywhere near the distance that He asked the wisemen too. Yet when God asks something of me I will often enter a debate with Him – is that really you that’s asking me to gift my time/money/possessions/talents and so on, or I ask you to prove that it’s you God. As if somehow the enemy is going to ask me to use my gifts or give away my possessions to advance the kingdom of God. Yet we enter into these supposed rational discussions to debate whether it’s God so He can prove himself. What about having obedience like the wisemen? You said what God? Okay sure, I will step out in faith in obedience with you for you.
Next time God asks you to do something, remember the obedience of the wisemen and let it be a reminder of God’s ability to sustain and guide you when you step out in obedience to His call. You never know who your obedience might be witnessing to. The wisemen would have never comprehended we would still be talking about their epic pilgrimage of obedience centuries on.
