Two weeks ago I had the privilege of attending Hagar International's annual conference, held at the stunning Hanmer Springs. (Hagar is the recovery link in the chain of abolishing slavery. They are based in Afghanistan, Cambodia and Vietnam.) As we drove to the conference a flurry of nerves began to fill my stomach as I began to wonder what God was going to stir in my heart and ask me to do for the cause of human trafficking. Over the course of the conference I got ideas for quotes and the images to put them on as a way to promote the cause. Below are a couple of quotes and images that I've been playing around with. I have written all the quotes.
Human trafficking is a cause that's been on my heart since I lived in London, where my church was partnered with the A21 Campaign. Over the past eight years the passion for the cause has come and gone. After having attended Hagar's conference I am determined to not let the busyness of life and of my own priorities diminish the passion I have for abolishing slavery in the 21st century. If I fall silent or am distracted I am failing the estimated 27 million people who are slaves today, because they have no voice. They need us to be their voice.
Feeling overwhelmed by the number of people who are trafficked can paralyse us from acting. But we can't let it because a little girl, an old man, a young aspiring doctor, a scared mother need us to rise up and stand on their behalf because they can't. Some basic ways of helping this cause are through prayer, buying fair trade products (not just food), rallying for tighter legislation to crack down on traffickers, taking a stand against pornography and telling people that there are an estimated 27 million people who are currently slaves. Last week I told a colleague that statistic and she had no idea!
I encourage you to share these images on Facebook/other social media to raise awareness for the cause of human trafficking.
