Seven times the Israelites walked around the walls of Jericho. I imagine that most of them would have thought that it would fall the first time around, if not the first then the second. But no it took seven times. The time it took didn’t diminish the answer to prayer or the outworking of God’s will. If anything it shone a light on the outworking of God’s will, with it happening in God’s timing not mans. I wonder if on the fifth time around the city walls some of the people thought that God had failed them, that He had forsaken them and left them.
God can’t fail. It is simply impossible. With that we can find great peace and comfort. Isaiah 54:17 says that no weapons formed against us will prosper. It doesn’t say no weapons will ever be formed. Just because the enemy has fashioned a weapon and is taking aim at you does not mean that God has failed. It just shows that the enemy is relentless but also foolish. After all this time has he not figured out that God can’t fail and that he (the enemy) will always fail and that what looks like a win is a smashing defeat? Although perhaps his perspective of winning is different to ours and to God’s.
There may be times where it feels like God has failed us or when the enemy has won or when God’s promises look like they haven’t come through. The key is that is what it feels or looks like, it is not the reality. Our emotions and vision can be easily swayed by our circumstances, emotions and situations we find ourselves in. Therefore our emotions and what we see can’t always be trusted. But God’s word, that can always be trusted. We can have confidence in it, always no matter what is happening around us or where we find ourselves. That is because God’s promises still stand. They have stood since the beginning of time and they will stand until the time on earth comes to an end and even after that forever in heaven.
The enemy starts to take territory in our lives when we hand over the reins of believing that God has never failed us, when we start believing or thinking that God has failed. Do you believe that God can see all of your days on earth so knows what you need now but also what you will need in 10 years time? Do you believe that He cares enough to hold somethings back because He knows it’s not in your best interests to get that now or perhaps ever? Have you committed the lives of those you love into His hands knowing they are not yours to hold onto tight, but are a gift from God for a season of your life? Do you truly believe Deuteronomy 31:6 which says God will never leave you or forsake you (aka fail you)? Do you believe that no matter how much it might look like the enemy is winning the battle that he’s not even close?
Perhaps what you think God has failed you on (perhaps it’s a job you applied for that you wanted but God didn’t open the door or you were looking for a flawless spouse and you married someone who doesn’t always measure up to your unrealistic expectations) is an issue of your heart or thinking, rather than being anything to do with God. Because God is always good and He never fails and never loses a fight. We can thank God himself for that!
