Several months ago I felt a wave of fear rush over me. At that stage I had been with my boyfriend a couple of months and things were getting serious. My unexpected onset of fear came from a place of not wanting to lose him (not through breaking up but through death). The fear was rooted in love for I had grown to love him and from that I never wanted to lose him.
Driving home one day I began to talk with God about this fear that was beginning to hold me captive. I felt God tell me that people are not ours to have, but rather ours to hold, that He entrusts people into our lives and our care for a season but not always for a lifetime. I felt Him say that people are His and never ours.
That revelation and word separated my love from my fear. Almost instantly the fear began to retreat as I began to realise that people are not ours but are God’s. He allows us to be in relationship with people but not always for a lifetime, even our spouse. Relationships, no matter how strong, don’t equal ownership. There is such freedom in that. Instead of clutching onto people, fearing for when they will no longer be around, we can be captured by the freedom of knowing they are ours to hold but God’s to have.
I hope you have been encouraged by this. I know I have been.
