Overfamiliarity with God can cause us to not have regular bible study time (or other healthy devotional habits), to not go to church expectant of encountering God and to not believe that God will move in our situation. We can become overfamiliar with particular scriptures because we hear them often, causing us to think we know what it means. Perhaps you do know what the scripture means but that doesn’t mean God doesn’t want to shine a new light on that scripture for you. We can zone out in a sermon because we’ve heard someone preach on that topic or scripture before.
In 1 Chronicles 13 the ark of the covenant is being moved. When the ark started to topple Uzzah put his hand on the ark to stop it from falling. He was killed instantly. Had he forgotten the power that the Ark encompassed? Was he overfamiliar with what lay before him?
What about the story of the men using the temple to sell goods… Did they forget how sacred the temple was? Did they think oh well it’s just the temple I’m sure we could use it to sell our belongings? Had they become overfamiliar with the sacred place in which they encountered God?
The enemy wants to make you think you know God and the bible so you disengage your level of expectancy and disciplined habits. Can you now see how overfamiliarity is a dangerous weapon of the enemy?
