Is this even possible if you’re not a skiing or snowboarding lover? I think so. Maybe not enjoying every winter day but definitely enjoying it more than not enjoying it! For those of you in the southern hemisphere we are just over the half way point of winter! Yay! Although, to be brutally honest, most of spring (in Canterbury anyway) isn’t often very warm.
How to make winter more enjoyable:
- A decent dumping of snow! I love watching snow fall, so magical. Don’t particularly like the aftermath of the snow but at the time it is pretty awesome. Plus can’t pass up a snow day off work. Granted the snow isn’t in our control no harm praying for it right? Or perhaps doing a snow dance?
- Have a PJ day every now and then. But not a PJ week or that might send out a mayday.
- Stay in an alpine cabin even just for a night. Alpine cabins have a way of just making winter seem natural and snuggly. Hanmer is a great spot for this! Be sure to get a cabin that has a fireplace so you can toast marshmallows and maybe even make smores! You can do this in summer but it’s just not the same!
- Hot lemonade (zap a mug of lemonade in the microwave for 60-90 seconds). - Make the most of the long dark nights by having candlelight dinners, baths and movie nights.
- And if all else fails remember that this season too will pass and it’ll be warm again (just don’t be one of the people who in winter complains it’s too cold but then in summer complains it’s too hot).
Essential supplies to have reserves of during winter:
Lemons, fresh ginger, lemonade, frozen grapes, soup sachets and spare tissues (ideally soft ones coating in something like eucalyptus). Don't forget to replenish your stocks when you use them !
Other tips:
- Grapes are great on a sore throat (discovered this out this week). What’s even better than fresh grapes are frozen ones. So good for soothing a sore throat. (Frozen grapes are also awesome for smoothies in the summer!)
- If you’re fortunate enough to be escaping the winter for a few days or longer be sure to dress warmly for your flight home, with additional emergency layers within easy access in case it’s colder than you expect or simply feels colder because you’ve been lying on the beach.
- If your holiday destination is also in winter but extremely mild compared to where you’ve come from and you find someone there complaining about how cold it is resist the urge to slap them. (I had this happen last month when I was on the Gold Coast. The hairdresser was telling me how it’s been a very cold winter for them. It was still getting to 20 degrees most days!)
- Invest in a cute cat (so long as it’s cuddly) and a hot water bottle. Great way of keeping you warm in the night, aside from your spouse if you have one.
Find that ever winter is a real struggle and you have dark days more than light? Maybe you’re suffering from SAD (Seasonal Adjustment Disorder). I think most of us suffer from it to a lesser or greater degree. Want to find out more about SAD go to http://psychcentral.com/disorders/depressive-disorder-with-seasonal-onset/
