As the flag debate lingers on and the referendum draws near I find myself wondering how much do I actually care about this issue. I am tired of the money talk and the discussions about which flag do you like best. Oh and the debates over whether or not the peak flag should have been allowed as one of the final flag contenders. Please stop!!!
We shouldn’t forget our history. It is what has shaped us into who we are as a national today. This is why I think we should keep the union jack on the flag. You might be thinking why should we do that because when other colonised nations changed their flags they did not keep traces of their British history on their new flag. Just because there are like 30 million sheep in New Zealand doesn’t mean we should act like sheep.
Keeping the union jack on the flag doesn’t mean we will forever be under the British rule, but more so it serves as a reminder of our history. And let’s be honest, it is a very recent history.
But as I pen this I do find myself torn as I look at the option on the far left, which I think was the top contender to battle it out against the existing flag. If I had to chose a new flag from the below I would chose the one on the far left. I like how it bears the colours from the original flag while also bearing the traditional black colour which is on most of the tops of our national sporting teams.
Regardless of my thoughts and even yours an important final question remains... when will this debate end! Soon I hope!
